Rationale for Program Establishment

In alignment with National Chengchi University (NCCU)’s internationalization policy and to enhance the multilingual learning environment for students, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature proposes the establishment of the Slavic Languages and Cultures Program.

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Taiwan’s political, economic, cultural, and technological exchanges with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Eastern European countries have expanded considerably. As a result, there is an urgent demand for professionals with expertise in the languages, cultures, and political-economic affairs of these regions.

Building on the current Russian language curriculum, the program will incorporate Polish and Czech, which also belong to the Slavic language family, and integrate them into the “Slavic Languages and Cultures Program.” This initiative seeks to cultivate professionals capable of addressing the changing needs of the nation, improving students' global competitiveness, and expanding their understanding of different cultures.

The "Slavic Languages and Cultures Program" will provide students with foundational training in Polish and Czech during their university tenure, equipping them with the language skills necessary to more easily adapt to their studies abroad, thereby achieving greater academic success.

Program Objectives

  • Broaden students' perspectives and learning outcomes.

  • Meet the growing demand for professionals in Slavic languages and cultures by cultivating highly skilled professionals in these fields.

  • Support and recommend outstanding students for advanced studies at universities in Russia and Eastern Europe.

  • Promote cultural and educational exchanges with Russia and Eastern European countries.

Curriculum

The courses for the Slavic Language and Culture Program are offered by the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and are open to all NCCU students (including Undergraduate, M.A., PhD., and in-service programs). Students from M.A., PhD., and in-service programs are required to pay tuition fees for credits in accordance with university regulations.

The program is divided into three sub-programs: the Russian Language and Culture Program, the Czech Language and Culture Program, and the Polish Language and Culture Program. Program certification requires the completion of at least 20 credits within the selected group. If fewer than 20 credits are earned, they will still be recognized as elective credits toward university graduation.
